Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Have you had a family, or rapidly lost weight leaving you with loose skin?
Almost everybody would love a flat stomach, but no matter how hard you exercise or how tough your diet is, it’s not always going to achieve the results you want when you have excess skin. Tummy tuck surgery can be a great option. This procedure rejuvenates the tummy area, giving an improved shape by removing the excess skin and fat from the stomach. It also tightens the muscles and restores the waist.
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is considered major surgery and can take around 2.5 hours, under a general anaesthetic, with a 1 or 2 night stay in our hospital. There are minor versions of this procedure, known as a mini tummy tuck, where the process is less invasive and only takes around 1.5 hours. Your specialist surgeon will help you decide the best option for you. They will also take you through the process step by step, explaining every stage and ensuring you’re comfortable with everything from start to finish.
You’ll need to plan on taking 1 to 2 weeks off work following the procedure and refrain from physical activities for 6 to 8 weeks. You’ll also need to wear a compression garment, which we’ll give you. It’ll help healing and reduce swelling or bruising. Your surgeon will explain all of this during your consultation.
HOW IT'S DONE
The surgical name for this procedure is abdominoplasty and here’s how it’s done.
Incisions are made, the skin is separated, skin is removed, belly button moved and sutured closed.
A new, re-positioned tummy button
The skin’s been brought together tightly, creating a firm, flat tummy
It’s sutured completely across the lower abdominal wall.
There will be swelling and bruising and it will last between 7 and 21 days. This can take up to 6 months to go and can also increase after certain activities.
A little discomfort
You can expect the pain to fade away after 1 or 2 weeks, but to ease any discomfort in that time, we’ll prescribe and administer pain relief.
A change in sensation
Sometimes patients notice a change in sensitivity. Don’t worry, this usually lasts just a few weeks, though it’s normal to last slightly longer. However, for a small percentage, it can be permanent.
The right clothing
You’ll need to wear a tight garment which we’ll provide, for up to 6 weeks after your procedure. Wear it round the clock to promote healing and reduce excess swelling and fluid building up.
Housework and picking up children
After a tummy tuck you shouldn’t lift anything heavy, or do any housework like hoovering for 4 to 6 weeks. Any strenuous activity can damage stitches and may compromise the overall result.
Is everyone suitable for this procedure?
No. Unfortunately, smoking and obesity can affect whether you are able to undergo this surgery. But don’t worry, our nurses will carry out a careful and thorough assessment to determine whether it’s right for you.
WHAT WILL THE SCARRING BE LIKE?
You can expect your scar to reach from hip bone to the other, sitting below your underwear line. You’ll also have a new belly button, which will have been repositioned, depending on the amount of tissue being removed. The scar will continue to fade for years following your procedure.
