Ear Reshaping (Otoplasty)
Do you feel as though your ears are protruding?
Imagine wearing your hair anyway you choose, or being liberated from feeling self-conscious. Ear reshaping is one of our most common procedures and the results give an amazing boost to confidence.
It’s a simple procedure called otoplasty. The cartilage is removed from behind your ear and tension sutures pin the ears back neater and closer. It usually takes around 30 minutes to 1 hour and, as it can be performed under local anaesthetic you can go home the same day. Sometimes a general anaesthetic is needed and you’ll stay in our hospital overnight. This is something that you’ll discuss with your specialist surgeon who will also take you through the process step by step, explaining every stage and ensuring you’re comfortable with everything from start to finish.
HOW IT'S DONE
Here’s how we do it.
The incision line is behind the ears and if reshaping is required then within the ear too.
Sutures are used to fold ear cartilage back.
Ears are now less obvious and protruding.
Bruising and swelling
There may be an element of bruising and swelling following ear surgery which can be expected to last around 1 to 3 weeks.
A little discomfort
Don’t be surprised if you feel a little uncomfortable after surgery, any discomfort you experience should ease in 7 to 21 days. To make it easier, we’ll prescribe and administer any pain relief you might need.
Having the ears pinned back involves making small incisions behind the ear, however the scarring is fairly unnoticeable.
A change in sensation
It’s not unusual to experience some numbness around your ears for a few months. This is pretty common, as are strange sensations, which pass over time, though in rare cases, a tiny area may stay numb.
Sometimes hair can be lost around the incision but it usually grows back in around 3 weeks.
